Taking in the Trash is a two-person exhibition of artwork made from discarded objects, reflecting the cultural and physical landscape created by the things we throw away. Katarina Jerinic and Karen Mainenti each collect trash from sites around New York City—whether left carelessly on the sidewalk or heaped deliberately into a landfill—and transform it through screen printing and painting. Their wry interventions reframe the remains of ordinary consumer products and comment on the environmental impact of our accumulating debris, past and present.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Juliette Spertus has spent the last fifteen years leading efforts to incorporate waste systems into urban design. She organized the exhibit Fast Trash: Roosevelt Island’s Pneumatic Tubes and the Future of Cities and is a co-author of the Zero Waste Design Guidelines. She now works for the New York City Housing Authority installing, evaluating and scaling new infrastructure to improve quality of life for residents and meet NYCHA's Sustainability Agenda goals.

Miriam Sicherman is a New York City-based teacher and historian. Her approach emphasizes the significance of everyday objects and ordinary people in constructing a comprehensive understanding of history. She is knowledgeable about Dead Horse Bay and is the author of Brooklyn's Barren Island: A Forgotten History, which delves into the area's past.
